This online studio event is about how Rome became a Christian city. The earliest Christian art and architecture emerged, almost imperceptibly, from the allusive religious art of the eastern Mediterranean. His forms were often limited to simple signs and inscriptions, and his monuments were almost invisible – a simple frontage of a house, an underground burial chamber. This changed the fact that the Church was given legal personality by Constantine in 313. From then on public monumental Christian art and architecture was possible and was actively embraced as extensive church building designs transformed the city. This online studio event consists of three one-hour lectures that respectively discuss the appearance of Christian images in the catacombs between c. 250 and c. 400 A.D., the development of church building types such as basilicas, baptisteries and martyrias, and the birth of Christian narrative art.

John McNeill teaches in the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Oxford and is Vice-President of the London Society for the History of Art. He is Honorary Secretary of the British Archaeological Society, for which he edited and contributed volumes on English medieval cloisters, convents and Romanesque material culture. He has long been interested in Rome and early Christian culture

I attended Corso di Storia dell’Arte to learn more about the museums in Florence. I knew it would be in Italian and I might have difficulty with it. However, Monica is fantastic; Her Italian is extremely pronounced, her enthusiasm is contagious. It is immediately obvious that he knows and loves Florentine and Renaissance art. She explained important details and also taught us many funny, trivial things. She was thoroughly prepared. She is the best. I highly recommend these courses to any student who wants to learn more about some of the major arts institutions as well as some of the less touristy ones. I can’t wait to go back to Florence and do more classes with Monika.

I highly recommend the art history tours organized by Scuola Leonardo da Vinci. We were lucky to be guided by well versed and knowledgeable Monica. Tours were conducted in Italian and relatively easy to understand as Monica provided information according to our needs and level. What I loved most about the tours was her ability to “bring to life” the characters and heroes of the time! It was really wonderful because we could visualize Michelangelo, Botticelli and other famous artists and sculptors working and contemplating their projects. I also loved getting to know, for example, the Medici family and the important role they played in Florence.
